STICKZ: One ''Lok'' is all it takes...
A newly-opened coffee shop stall in Telok Ayer specialises in halal lok lok, a communal dish consisting of various deep-fried foods such as meats and vegetables usually sold from food trucks in Malaysia.
The stall, simply named Stickz, officially opened on Jan. 25, and will operate till 6pm for the rest of the month. It will remain open till 10pm in February onwards.
Halal lok lok
Stickz’ opening follows hard on the heels of Ah Lock’s Kitchen, a lok lok stall in Woodlands which recently got halal certified.
Will this year be the year of the halal lok lok? It’s still early days, but we expect the trend to pick up seeing how we won’t be able to enter JB any time soon.
How to order
Customers begin by picking their own items from the stall’s display fridge, much like how one would choose ingredients at a yong tau foo stall.
In terms of selection, there seems to be a decent amount of variety; we spot skewers of prawns, crab sticks, nuggets, sausage, fishball, mushroom, broccoli and more.
According to a reply to a query on its Facebook page, Stickz said that its lok lok ranges from S$1.20 to S$1.80 per stick, and that there is no minimum order.
Step 2 involves choosing a seasoning for the lok lok. At the time of writing, there are two dry seasonings (seaweed and mala) as well as three sauces (peri-peri, sambal kicap manis, and Thai sweet chilli).
So far, the seasonings have received praises from customers. According to a Facebook review by one Sebastian Koh, he said “Both the seaweed and mala taste so dam good. Not to mention the homemade kecap manis and peri peri sauce, if can tabao, sure buy.”
After choosing your seasonings, hand over your selections and make payment. A buzzer will be given, and this will alert you once the lok lok have been deep fried and seasoned with your seasoning of choice.
